Empowering the Bloemfontein Community Through Diabetes Education

Carmen Tak, a mother from Bloemfontein, is one of thousands of parents in South Africa who have to make decisions every day to support and help her son after he was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes.
Concerned about the local school's capability to manage students with Type-1 diabetes, she decided to establish the Carters Diabetes Awareness Centre that caters for children who suffer from this condition.
She also drive awareness of the condition in her community and Bloemfontein at large.
Three years ago, our son Carter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes β a journey that has taught us so much about care, discipline, and resilience π
On Saturday, 04 April 2026, he had his very first check-up with Wayne Marais, and weβre happy to share some wonderful news β his eyes are still in great condition! ποΈβ¨
This visit was also a powerful reminder of how important good glucose control is in protecting long-term health, especially when it comes to vision.
We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity for Carter to be examined, and for the guidance, encouragement, and motivation we received.
Every step forward is a win β and every check-up is a reminder that with the right care, knowledge, and support, living well with Type 1 Diabetes is absolutely possible π
We are incredibly proud to share that our story has been featured in the Mangaung Issue and in The Citizen β a meaningful step forward in raising awareness where it matters most π
This platform allows us to shine a light on an important mission: educating local primary schools on how to properly support and care for learners living with Type 1 Diabetes.
Through this awareness, we aim to equip teachers, staff, and peers with practical knowledge β the doβs and donβts, the signs to watch for, and the simple yet life-changing actions that help keep our little fighters safe, supported, and thriving.
Because every child deserves not only to be safe at school, but to feel included, understood, and empowered within the education system π
Together, through education and awareness, we can create environments where children with Type 1 Diabetes donβt just cope β they confidently belong, grow, and succeed π

CARTER's DIABETIC AWARENESS & EDU-CARE visited our school and made us aware of the challenges that children have who is suffering from diabetes. The awareness session highlighted the importance of diabetes management in schools. Thanks Carter's Diabetics Awareness & Edu-Care for the insights.

We never realised the importance and impact diabetes has in our society and more so with learners. Not only that, educators were made aware of this dreadful condition and is now more prepared to handle it in the school community. Looking forward to a follow up session
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), previously known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic autoimmune condition.
In simple terms: The body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Because of this, the pancreas can no longer produce insulin, a vital hormone the body needs to survive.
More than just facilitators, we're a family of book lovers dedicated to your child's journey. Get to know the friendly faces who create a safe, fun, and inspiring space at our Book Club every week.
