Empowering the Bloemfontein Community Through Diabetes Education

Today I would like to thank a old Post Office colleague and very good friend Kgalalelo Mphephuka for her generous donation of two laptops to our Book Club Librarary. There are many kids in the Heidedal community who already have access to cellphones, laptops, computers,TV games, etc. There are also the ones that do do not have access to tools that can assist them. What this donation means to our Book Club is that our children can have access to tools that can assist them with school assignments and research. This will enable them to excell and perform better and reach targets and goals that was set. I am eternally greatful Mme Kgalalelo. May you stay blessed ๐โค๏ธ๐๐

What a fantastic Saturday we had on 30 May 2026! ๐
Our members were treated to a very special visit from Childline, presented by our very own Wilmina Weitz. The session was both educational and engaging, and the children thoroughly enjoyed learning important life lessons in a fun and interactive way. ๐๐
The excitement continued with plenty of target shooting fun ๐ฏ, energetic dancing ๐๐บ, and lots of laughter shared between friends.
One of the most memorable moments of the day was when each child painted their handprint and added their name to our wall. ๐๏ธ๐จ Together, we created a colourful masterpiece that celebrates the unique place each child holds in our Carter's Book Club family.
A day filled with learning, creativity, friendship, and smiles all around! We can't wait for our next adventure together. โค๏ธ

On Saturday, 09 May, our young stars had the exciting opportunity to learn the beautiful game of Chess with the founder of the Heidedal Chess Foundation, Mr Vaughan! โ๏ธโจ
The room was filled with excitement, laughter, and curious minds as our members learned new chess skills and strategies. From the very first move, the children showed incredible enthusiasm and focus! ๐ง ๐
Chess is more than just a game โ it teaches patience, confidence, concentration, and problem-solving in a fun and creative way. Seeing our learners so engaged and eager to learn made the day truly unforgettable. ๐
Of course, we also enjoyed our special book reading session ๐ and celebrated our amazing moms with a small Motherโs Day gift ๐ because every queen deserves to be appreciated! ๐
A huge THANK YOU to Mr Vaughan for sharing his passion and inspiring our learners through chess. We canโt wait for the next move! โ๏ธ๐ซ

Three years ago, our son Carter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes โ a journey that has taught us so much about care, discipline, and resilience ๐
On Saturday, 04 April 2026, he had his very first check-up with Wayne Marais, and weโre happy to share some wonderful news โ his eyes are still in great condition! ๐๏ธโจ
This visit was also a powerful reminder of how important good glucose control is in protecting long-term health, especially when it comes to vision.
We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity for Carter to be examined, and for the guidance, encouragement, and motivation we received.
Every step forward is a win โ and every check-up is a reminder that with the right care, knowledge, and support, living well with Type 1 Diabetes is absolutely possible ๐
We are incredibly proud to share that our story has been featured in the Mangaung Issue and in The Citizen โ a meaningful step forward in raising awareness where it matters most ๐
This platform allows us to shine a light on an important mission: educating local primary schools on how to properly support and care for learners living with Type 1 Diabetes.
Through this awareness, we aim to equip teachers, staff, and peers with practical knowledge โ the doโs and donโts, the signs to watch for, and the simple yet life-changing actions that help keep our little fighters safe, supported, and thriving.
Because every child deserves not only to be safe at school, but to feel included, understood, and empowered within the education system ๐
Together, through education and awareness, we can create environments where children with Type 1 Diabetes donโt just cope โ they confidently belong, grow, and succeed ๐

On Saturday, 13 December 2025, Carmen visited the School of Armour with several children from the centre. The group was warmly welcomed by Capt Luriska Jooste, Adjutant of the School of Armour, and taken on a guided tour of the unit by Capt Jooste and Sgt Mpho Mokhele, Acting Communication Officer of the School of Armour. Throughout the visit, members engaged with the children in a spirit of respect, discipline, and professionalism. The children had great fun and was in awe of what they have learnt. Thank you to the SANDF School of Armour for hosting Carter's Diabetic and Edu-Care Centre.

You'll never guess what we've been up to! Our little team got together for a super fun project: building the South African flag with a rainbow of plastic bottle caps. The room was buzzing with excitement as we pieced it all together. The best part? We shared the wonderful story behind our flag and what each of its colours represents. So much joy in one colourful afternoon!

A Sprouting Success: Our Green Project Day!

What an incredible day we had on Saturday, October 25th, 2025! The Carter's Book Club was buzzing with excitement for our special Green Project, where we dug into the wonderful world of plants.
Our young learners discovered just how powerful plants areโnot only do they beautify our community spaces, but they also clean our air and bring people together. The highlight? Getting our hands dirty to plant vibrant chilli trees! The enthusiasm was contagious, and everyone had an absolute blast.
The adventure doesn't end there! Each budding gardener proudly took their very own chilli tree home. We can't wait to see their weekly growth updates, as this ongoing project will beautifully reveal the magic and wonder of nature, right before our eyes. Watch this space for updates on our little green wonders!
