About Your Carmen Tak

Carmen Tak, a mother from Bloemfontein, is one of thousands of parents in South Africa who have to make decisions every day to support and help her son after he was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes.

Concerned about the local school's capability to manage students with Type-1 diabetes, she decided to establish the Carters Diabetes Awareness Centre that caters for children who suffer from this condition.

She also drive awareness of the condition in her community and Bloemfontein at large.

📚✨ Inspiring Young Minds, One Story at a Time!

Carter's Book Club was buzzing with excitement as we welcomed Juan Olifant, a third-year Auditing student at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein and a proud member of the prestigious Abe Bailey Programme—an elite cohort of South Africa's emerging leaders.

Juan captivated our young readers with an engaging reading session, shared powerful life lessons, and encouraged every child to dream big, work hard, and never underestimate the power of education. His passion, humility, and inspiring story reminded our children that today's readers can become tomorrow's leaders.

A huge thank you, Juan, for investing in the future—one child, one book, and one dream at a time!

We never realised the importance and impact diabetes has in our society and more so with learners. Not only that, educators were made aware of this dreadful condition and is now more prepared to handle it in the school community. Looking forward to a follow up session

WHAT IS TYPE-1 diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), previously known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic autoimmune condition.

In simple terms: The body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Because of this, the pancreas can no longer produce insulin, a vital hormone the body needs to survive.
