Empowering the Bloemfontein Community Through Diabetes Education

Carmen Tak, a mother from Bloemfontein, is one of thousands of parents in South Africa who have to make decisions every day to support and help her son after he was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes.
Concerned about the local school's capability to manage students with Type-1 diabetes, she decided to establish the Carters Diabetes Awareness Centre that caters for children who suffer from this condition.
She also drive awareness of the condition in her community and Bloemfontein at large.
On Saturday, 13 December 2025, Carmen visited the School of Armour with several children from the centre. The group was warmly welcomed by Capt Luriska Jooste, Adjutant of the School of Armour, and taken on a guided tour of the unit by Capt Jooste and Sgt Mpho Mokhele, Acting Communication Officer of the School of Armour. Throughout the visit, members engaged with the children in a spirit of respect, discipline, and professionalism. The children had great fun and was in awe of what they have learnt. Thank you to the SANDF School of Armour for hosting Carter's Diabetic and Edu-Care Centre.

CARTER's DIABETIC AWARENESS & EDU-CARE visited our school and made us aware of the challenges that children have who is suffering from diabetes. The awareness session highlighted the importance of diabetes management in schools. Thanks Carter's Diabetics Awareness & Edu-Care for the insights.

We never realised the importance and impact diabetes has in our society and more so with learners. Not only that, educators were made aware of this dreadful condition and is now more prepared to handle it in the school community. Looking forward to a follow up session
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), previously known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic autoimmune condition.
In simple terms: The body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Because of this, the pancreas can no longer produce insulin, a vital hormone the body needs to survive.
